How Watching Cartoons Affects Your Child's Life

In this day and age, children aren't the only one watching cartoons. The patrons of cartoons have increasingly become older, especially after the Japanese animation, anime, became popular. Everywhere, you see posters or generally any merchandise of pigs with wings, wide-eyed girls with weird hairstyles, or guys whom you mistake for girls. Statistics now state that the average person spends many hours viewing cartoons, either in television or through cds/dvds. It is may be speculated then that such media can affect his/her view of the world, and even their personality.

This is why, along with its rapid rise in fans, came the parents' concerns regarding the negative effects of viewing cartoons. Well, if we consider the availability of perverted ones or the overly-violent cartoons, we can certainly see the cause for concern. However, not all are like that. As much as there are for-adults'-viewing-only shows, there are many that provide inspiration and motivation for others. Let us focus on their effects on one's self-esteem. Self-esteem, first of all, is the experience of being capable of meeting life's challenges and being worthy of happiness. People who have low self esteem never feel in charge of their own lives. They often feel like they're unimportant, victims or outsiders.

Watching someone who is like that, seeing a character projected with such traits, doesn't it get one thinking? For example, if you'd ever spied a Winnie The Pooh episode, you'll notice that Eeyore, an example of a character who has low self esteem, has a pessimistic view in life. He sees all endings as bad endings. Tigger, contrary to Eeyore, has an optimistic view in life. Even with things going wrong, his spirits are never dampened. I don't know about you, but it makes me want to be Tigger.

I believe this is how most humans are. We need to concretely see for ourselves so we may realize that we are completely capable (of any evils, or any good things). Cartoon characters now serve as, pardon the term, role models, either of what we want to be or what not to be. More than just wanting to be like the cartoon characters, there's also the plots and storyline where we pick up a lot from. Take Dexter (from the show Dexter's Lab)'s situation. No matter how ingenious he is, he somehow still loses to his sister. We note here that in life, there will always be Deedees in our lives, it is up to us what to do next. Be in control of your life. Love yourself.

Currently, cartoons are being used as complementary work materials in an educational setting. Cartoons are intrinsic stimulators and information transmitters. Teachers can take advantage of this by using cartoons to teach children. It can be used as a tool to teach children better. Parents too, can make use of such. They could sit down with the children and watch cartoons with them, while pointing out what is good and bad. Certainly, their offspring will learn a lot from this.

Think of it this way - cartoons are just like books, it's just that they're animated. Watching them is much like being read a story book with morals before bed time. It could also be like watching feel-good movies that gets you smiling and wanting to change the world (into a better place) afterwards.
