A Date with BPH - Prostate Enlargement Symptoms, Causes, Complications, Diagnosis

Many men nearing their 50's or 60's find that they are no longer sleeping through the night, but are awakening, needing to urinate. They're showing the symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland. An enlarged prostate can cause symptoms that are relatively minor, but symptoms can also be severe and can greatly disrupt one's life-- all the way up to total urinary blockage and a visit to the emergency room. There are some prostate treatments, ranging from natural herbs to surgery, that can reduce or eliminate symptoms.
Inability to sleep through the night because of the need to get up several times a night to urinate is one of the most annoying, and even dangerous symptoms. Men may need to structure their days so that they're never far from a bathroom because of sudden and urgent needs to urinate. They may find that they "dribble." In severe cases, some men become completely unable to "hold it." There may be discomfort and pain.

Fortunately, there are prescription drugs, and even natural, non-prescription prostate treatments that can help. Occasionally, where nothing else helps, men even have their prostate glands surgically removed.
Doctors don't totally understand why some mens' prostates enlarge, and others don't. It is clear that high levels of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in the prostate has something to do with it, because when the action of the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT is blocked by drugs or natural substances, and DHT levels in the prostate are reduced, prostate glands shrink.

The primary mode of operation of the non-prescription prostate treatments is to block the activity of 5-alpha reductase.
The most commonly-used herbal treatment is saw palmetto, which has been studied for years, especially in Europe, where it's widely used. In the United States, prescriptions drugs like Avodart and Proscar, which also block the action of the enzyme are more widely used. The prescription drugs can be effective, although not on all men. Of course they are more expensive and have many more side effects, and some studies have shown that they are no more effective than some of the non-prescription products.

There is another class of prescription prostate treatments, which work differently. Drugs like "Flomax" work by relaxing smooth muscles surrounding the urethra and in the neck of the bladder. This can reduce pressure on the urethra, and permit the bladder to empty more completely, and allow for a stronger urine stream. They can be quite effective for some men, but a lot of men aren't helped much, and there can be annoying, and even severe side effects.

2) Increasing Soy Intake - Researchers believe that the increasing estrogen-to-testosterone ratio brought on by aging is one of the factors that adversely affects the size of the prostate gland. 2 ounces or more of soy in your daily diet will help decrease estrogen levels and restore proper estrogen-to-testosterone ratio that becomes skewed as men get into their 60s and beyond. Good sources of soy include tofu (soybean curd), miso, tempeh, roasted soy nuts, and soy flour or powder.

3) Increasing Selenium Intake - Selenium is essential for good prostate health. Selenium-rich foods include wheat germ, tuna, herring and other seafood and shellfish, beef liver and kidney, eggs, sunflower and sesame seeds, cashews, Brazil nuts, mushrooms, garlic, onions, and kelp.

4) Increasing Zinc Intake - 15 mg of zinc are needed daily for healthy prostate function. Pumpkin seed in the shell, oysters, beans, and nuts are excellent sources of zinc.

5) Minimizing Alcohol Consumption - Alcohol depletes both zinc and vitamin B6 (which is necessary for zinc absorption).

6) Eating Healthy - Eat lots of fruits and vegetables to get the necessary antioxidants in your diet. Avoid saturated fats, sugars and processed foods. High-fat foods like meats and dairy products can elevate testosterone level which stimulates prostate cell growth and enlargement.

7) Supplementing Diet - Take a daily multivitamin supplement which includes at least the following for supporting prostate health - Vitamin A (25,000 IU), Vitamin E (1,200 IU), and Lycopene (10 mg).

8) Improving Circulation - Perform Kegel exercises to improve blood flow to the prostate and urogenital tissues. Kegel exercises are done by pulling up all the muscles around the scrotum and anus, holding, and releasing. 10 repetitions of this movement, 5-6 times daily will maximize blood flow to your prostate gland.

9) Adopting Healthy Lifestyle - Get sufficient rest and exercise regularly. Regular exercise has been shown to strengthen the immune system and improve digestion, circulation, and the removal of waste matter from the body. Exercise also prevents obesity, which is a risk factor for many diseases, including cancer. Regular exercise may also reduce the risk of prostate gland enlargement.
